Final Score: Western Michigan 45, Eastern Michigan 30
Kalamazoo, MI (Sports Network) - Alex Carder threw for 349 yards and four touchdowns to help lead the Western Michigan Broncos to a 45-30 win over the Eastern Michigan Eagles in Mid-American Conference action at Waldo Stadium.
Carder converted 17-of-21 passes for the Broncos (4-6, 3-3 MAC) as they snapped a two-game slide. Juan Nunez turned four receptions into 110 yards and two TDs, while Brian Fields carried the ball 11 times for 107 yards and two TDs in the victory.
The Eagles (1-9, 1-5) were paced by Alex Gillett who hit on 13-of-24 passes for 214 yards and three scores, but he was picked off twice and sacked four times in the team's third consecutive loss. Gillett accounted for a game-high 159 rushing yards and a score as well.
WMU opened the meeting with consecutive TDs as Carder hit Fields and Nunez with scoring strikes of nine and 20 yards, respectively.
The Eagles cut into that early lead when Gillett found the end zone on a 32- yard run at the 2:34 mark of the first quarter.
Western Michigan kicker John Potter was heard from early in the second when he capped a six-play, 59-yard drive with a 39-yard field goal to make the score 17-7.
Gillett struck again for the Eagles when he combined with Chaz Mitchell on a 39-yard TD pass play, but the teams continued to trade scores through the end of the first half so cutting into the deficit was difficult to do.
Fields, who had two catches for 20 yards, made one for six yards that reached into the end zone for the Broncos, but before the first half could end Gillett finished off a 78-yard drive with a 40-yard scoring toss to Tyrone Burke to make the score 24-21 at the break.
EMU kicker Sean Graham made good on a 20-yard field goal to open the second half to actually knot the score at 24-24 with 8:32 to play in the third quarter.
Unfortunately for the Eagles, Carder responded on the next possession with a 33-yard TD pass to Jordan White and Fields followed that up with a 47-yard TD run early in the fourth to push the lead back out to 38-24.
Gillett's 32-yard TD pass to Garrett Hoskins with 9:29 to play in the fourth eased the visitors closer, but the PAT failed and EMU was caught with an eight-point deficit.
Putting the game out of reach just seconds later was Nunez who raced 66 yards with a pass from Carder to cap the day's scoring and give the home team the 15-point win.
Eastern Michigan rolled up 491 yards of offense on 80 snaps, but with 32 fewer plays from scrimmage the Broncos accounted for 518 yards. WMU dominated the afternoon despite controlling the ball for just over 20 minutes.
