NCAA Game Summary - Northern Illinois at Akron

Akron, OH (Sports Network) - Chandler Harnish threw for 281 yards and three touchdowns as he led the Northern Illinois Huskies to a convincing 50-14 victory over the Akron Zips in Mid-American Conference play at InfoCision Stadium.

Harnish converted 16-of-20 passes for the Huskies (3-2, 1-0 MAC) as they won their second in a row and the third in the last four outings. Willie Clark turned three receptions into 46 yards and two scores, while Chad Spann generated a team-best 84 yards and a TD on 16 carries.

The Zips (0-5, 0-1) were paced by Alex Allen who ran for 99 yards and two touchdowns on 14 attempts in the setback. Quarterback Patrick Nicely connected on 14-of-26 passes for 128 yards, was intercepted once and sacked two times on the evening.

Michael Cklamovski put the first points on the board for the Huskies with his 27-yard field goal early in the first quarter.

Allen countered for the Zips with his one-yard TD run four minutes later, providing the home team with a 7-3 edge.

Cklamovski added field goals of 27 and 43 yards to put NIU ahead to stay as the team ran off three more scores before the end of the first half.

Spann reached the end zone on a three-yard run at the 4:32 mark of the second quarter, followed by a Harnish seven-yard TD strike to Clark to give the Huskies a 22-7 advantage following a failed PAT. With less than a minute remaining in the first half, Devon Butler picked off an Akron pass and returned it 26 yards for the score, putting the Huskies up 29-7 at the break.

Capping a three-play, 80-yard drive to open the second half, Allen scored his second touchdown of the game for the Zips, also from one yard out, cutting the deficit to 29-14.

Harnish hit Clark and Nathan Palmer later in the frame with touchdown passes of 16 and 58 yards, respectively, while Ricky Crider tacked on the final TD of the contest on a 20-yard effort just seconds in the fourth quarter to give the visitors the commanding 36-point win.

Northern Illinois, which converted 10-of-14 on third down, racked up 520 yards of total offense.
