Final Score: Tulane 17, Rutgers 14
Piscataway, NJ (Sports Network) - Wide receiver D.J. Banks completed one of his two pass attempts on a trick play for a 24-yard touchdown strike to Joe Kemp, proving to be the game-winning score as the Tulane Green Wave defeated the Rutgers Scarlet Knights 17-14 in a non-conference affair at Rutgers Stadium.
Tulane's (2-2) quarterback Ryan Griffin threw for 140 yards on 17-of-28 passing. The win snapped a six-game road losing streak for the Green Wave.
Mohamed Sanu rushed for 121 yards and one touchdown on just nine carries in the loss for Rutgers (2-2). Quarterbacks Chas Dodd and Tom Savage combined to hit 15-of-34 passes for 205 yards, one TD and one interception, but were also sacked a collective four times on the afternoon.
Sanu, who also caught five balls for 70 yards, gave the Scarlet Knights an early 7-0 lead after a long 91-yard touchdown run on the game's second play from scrimmage.
Tulane found itself on the scoreboard in the second quarter after kicker Cairo Santos connected on a 39-field goal. The Green Wave scored on its next possession when Payten Jason found the end zone on a two-yard run, giving the visitors their first lead of the game, 10-7, as the teams headed into the intermission.
Banks completed a 24-yard touchdown pass to Kemp early in the third quarter to give Tulane the 17-7 advantage.
Rutgers answered as Sanu scored his second touchdown on the day, this time on a 10-yard pass from Chas Dodd, but the Scarlet Knights still trailed 17-14 heading into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter proved to be a defensive showdown as neither team put up any points, as Tulane walked away with the tough road victory.
