On their first play from scrimmage the Panthers took a 7-0 lead when Sunseri hit Devin Street with a 79-yard touchdown pass.

Syracuse evened the score later in the quarter when Delone Carter plunged into the end zone on a one-yard run, capping off a 10-play, 83-yard drive for the Orange.

In the final seconds of the opening frame the Panthers regained a seven-point edge when Sunseri hit Ray Graham with a 15-yard scoring strike.

Pitt continued to pull away in the second stanza, as Sunseri threw his third touchdown of the contest, this score going to Mike Shanahan for 30 yards.

A one-yard touchdown run by Lewis late in the first half pushed Pittsburgh's lead to 28-7.

Pitt's onslaught continued as the defense got involved in the scoring when Ricky Gary returned an interception 80 yards to push the Panthers up 35-7. That would be the lone touchdown in the third quarter for either team.

Syracuse cut into its deficit early in the final quarter when Nassib capped off a 12-play, 81-yard drive with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Van Chew.

The Panthers went right back to work after Syracuse's touchdown, as Dan Hutchins nailed a 24-yard field goal, and that was followed with a six-yard touchdown pass from Sunseri to Brock DeCicco.

Sunseri's fourth touchdown pass would be the last points of the matchup, as the Panthers rolled for the 31-point victory.
