Final Score: (19) Miami-Florida 31, Pittsburgh 3
Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Jacory Harris threw for a pair of touchdowns and 19th-ranked Miami-Florida pounded Pittsburgh, 31-3, at Heinz Field.
Harris completed 21-of-32 passes for 248 yards and was intercepted twice. Damien Berry rushed for 87 yards and a touchdown for the Hurricanes (2-1), who bounced back from a loss at Ohio State on September 11. This was the 33rd straight win for the Hurricanes against an unranked non-conference opponent in regular season play.
"We did a lot of great things tonight but there are still some things that we have to improve on," Hurricanes coach Randy Shannon said. "Our offense did a great job in the red zone; we didn't do a great job against Ohio State on that, so we showed improvement. We still need to correct the turnovers. We need to make sure that those guys connect better. We just have to keep working at it."
Tino Sunseri connected on 8-of-15 passes for 61 yards for the Panthers (1-2), who have lost seven straight games to the Hurricanes. Pat Bostick finished 5- of-9 for 43 yards and was picked off twice. Ray Graham ran for 100 yards on 14 carries in defeat.
"They (Miami) are a good football team," Bostick said. "They came out and they beat us up tonight. Did we beat ourselves a little? I think so. I'm not worried. We have too much character. I trust our coaching staff."
Miami received the ball after the game's opening kickoff and marched 80 yards in 10 plays, capped by a one-yard TD run up the middle from Berry.
Harris was picked off on Miami's next drive, but the Hurricanes' defense rose to the task and held the Panthers without a first down until midway through the second quarter.
Matt Bosher's 28-yard field goal widened the gap to 10-0 with 8 1/2 minutes left in the half.
Jarred Holley intercepted Harris with under seven minutes to go in the half, but Dan Hutchins was wide left on a 52-yard field goal try for the Panthers with 11 seconds remaining.
Leonard Hankerson caught a 19-yard TD pass from Harris just over three minutes into the third for a 17-0 cushion.
Pittsburgh finally cracked the scoreboard on a Hutchins 27-yard field goal, 33 seconds into the fourth.
Just over a minute later, Harris was sacked by Jabaal Sheard and went out for a play after having his left shoulder looked at on the sideline. Harris was back in a short time later after the Panthers muffed a punt return. The Hurricanes took advantage, starting the drive at the Pittsburgh 43, with Harris capping the march with a 10-yard scoring toss to Travis Benjamin.
Bostick was intercepted twice in a span of less than two minutes later in the fourth, and Lamar Miller sealed Miami's rout with a one-yard TD run with 3:16 to play.
