NCAA Game Summary - Maryland at Clemson

(Saturday, October 16th)

Final Score: Clemson 31, Maryland 7

Clemson, SC (Sports Network) - Andre Ellington scored on a kickoff return and also had a rushing touchdown, as the Clemson Tigers cruised to a 31-7 win over the Maryland Terrapins in ACC action at Memorial Stadium.

Clemson (3-3, 1-2 ACC) snapped a three-game skid despite just 213 yards of total offense for the game. Ellington had 41 yards on 16 carries, while quarterback Kyle Parker completed only 7-of-20 passes for 106 yards.

Maryland (4-2, 1-1) saw its modest two-game win streak come to an end, despite racking up 350 yards of total offense. Danny O'Brien threw for 302 yards with no touchdowns and three interceptions.

Clemson got three points on its opening drive as Chandler Catanzaro connected on a 42-yard field goal.

The Terps took a 7-3 lead thanks to a trick play at the 11:33 mark of the second quarter, when running back Da'Rel Scott tossed a four-yard touchdown pass to O'Brien.

However, Ellington grabbed the momentum right back for Clemson by returning the ensuing kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown to put the Tigers back on top.

Terps' kicker Travis Baltz missed a 33-yard field goal attempt midway through the second quarter. Clemson took over possession and drove 80 yards in just under seven minutes, with running back Jamie Harper scoring on a 4th-and-1 to make it a 17-7 game with 32 seconds remaining until halftime.

Clemson added to its lead early in the third quarter as Ellington scored on a one-yard plunge, which was set up by a long punt return that gave the Tigers the ball on the Maryland 21-yard line.

The Tigers put the game away at the 5:31 mark of the fourth quarter, when Xavier Brewer stepped in front of an O'Brien pass and returned it 61 yards for the game's final touchdown.

Maryland had won three of its last four matchups with Clemson, but the Tigers controlled this one from start to finish.
