South Bend, IN (Sports Network) - Dayne Crist threw for 242 yards and a touchdown to lead the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to a 23-17 victory over the Pittsburgh Panthers in a non-conference matchup at Notre Dame Stadium.
Crist completed 24-of-39 pass attempts to pace Notre Dame (3-3) in the win, while Theo Riddick caught seven passes for 75 yards. Michael Floyd grabbed seven passes as well for the Irish, gaining 59 yards with a touchdown in the process.
Tino Sunseri threw for 272 yards with a touchdown and an interception to lead the way in the losing effort for Pittsburgh (2-3) with Jon Baldwin representing his favorite target to the tune of nine catches for 111 yards and a score.
The Panthers struck first in this one, as Dan Hutchins connected on a 26-yard field goal early in the first quarter.
The Irish responded late in the stanza, as Crist found Floyd for a one-yard scoring strike.
The Irish took a 14-3 lead midway through the second quarter with a 10-yard Crist run.
Ruffer added a 32-yard field goal late in the stanza to give the Irish a 17-3 halftime advantage.
A 50-yard kick from Ruffer early in the third period extended the Irish lead to 20-3.
The Panthers got into the end zone late in the frame, as Sunseri broke the plane on a four-yard run.
Ruffer split the uprights once more early in the final period of play, a 31- yard kick to help the Irish to a 23-10 lead.
Sunseri found Baldwin midway through the stanza for a 56-yard completion that cut the Irish lead to 23-17, but Notre Dame was able to hold the Panthers the rest of the way to escape with a slim victory.
