Denton, TX (Sports Network) - Daniel Thomas marched for 269 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 36 carries for Kansas State as the Wildcats defeated the North Texas Mean Green 49-41 in a non-conference affair at Fouts Field.
Carson Coffman threw for just 77 yards and a score on 9-of-20 passing in the win for Kansas State (7-5).
North Texas (3-9) received a big game from its running game as well as Lance Dunbar ran for 270 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries. Quarterback Dodge Riley threw for 123 yards and a touchdown on 8-of-12 passing in the loss.
Dunbar kicked off the scoring with a 52-yard touchdown scamper early in the opening quarter to give the Mean Green a 7-0 advantage.
Kansas State answered when Thomas ran the ball in from 23 yards out, tying the game at 7-7.
North Texas took charge as Riley found Jamaal Jackson from 15 yards out for the score and a 13-7 lead after the extra point was missed. Dunbar added a 63- yard touchdown run late in the opening quarter to put the Mean Green in control, 20-7.
Coffman scored one of Kansas State's five rushing touchdown early in the second stanza after punching it in from one yard out as the Wildcats still trailed, 20-14. With five seconds remaining before the intermission, Coffman found Chris Harper for a seven-yard touchdown strike as Kansas State took the 21-20 advantage into the half.
Collin Klein scampered from six yards out for the Wildcats to begin the scoring in the third quarter, giving Kansas State a 28-20 lead. The Wildcats extended the advantage to 35-20 after Braden Wilson darted into the end zone from one yard out.
Dunbar was able to briefly stop the bleeding with another long touchdown run, this time from 36 yards out, as the Mean Green narrowed the deficit to 35-27.
Kansas State answered back as Thomas scored his second touchdown, this time from three yards out, as 13 seconds remained in the third quarter with the Wildcats holding a 42-27 lead.
Brelan Chancellor returned the ensuing kickoff 93 yards for the score as North Texas now trailed, 42-34.
Aubrey Quarles then followed suit as he answered the very next kickoff with a 92-yard return to paydirt, handing Kansas State the 49-34 lead.
Dunbar punched in his final touchdown of the day from 17 yards out, but it wouldn't be enough as the North Texas ultimately fell by a 49-41 tally to the Wildcats.
