Boulder, CO (Sports Network) - Rodney Stewart rushed for 195 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Colorado Buffaloes to a thrilling, 44-36 victory over the Kansas State Wildcats in Big-12 Conference action at Folsom Field.
Cody Hawkins added 202 yards through the air for Colorado (5-6, 2-5 Big12) and also tossed three touchdowns in the win. Stewart also threw a touchdown in the contest, while Scotty McKnight hauled in two touchdown passes, finishing the game with 74 yards on four receptions.
Collin Klein rushed for two touchdowns for KSU (6-5, 3-5), but the quarterback only threw for 40 yards before exiting the game in the second quarter with an injury. Carson Coffman was outstanding in a reserve role, throwing for 270 yards and two scores. One of those scores went to Aubrey Quarles, who finished with 114 yards on five catches.
Klein's one-yard touchdown run early in the opening quarter gave KSU a 7-0 lead.
Aric Goodman connected on a 48-yard field goal for Colorado, but Klein plunged into the end zone for another one-yard score minutes later, giving the Wildcats a 14-3 lead.
In the final seconds of the opening quarter Stewart found the end zone on a one-yard run, but a blocked extra point left the Buffs on the wrong end of a 14-9 score.
However, Colorado would take its first lead of the game early in the second stanza when Stewart connected with Toney Clemons on a 23-yard scoring strike.
With less than two minutes remaining in the first half the Buffs pushed their lead to 23-14 with a 37-yard pass and catch between Hawkins and McKnight.
The duo of Hawkins and McKnight hooked up again, this time for a 13-yard touchdown that extended Colorado's lead to 30-14 midway through the third frame.
Kansas State was able to cut its deficit to eight points thanks to a six-yard touchdown run by Coffman, which was followed a Daniel Thomas pass to Andre McDonald for a two-point conversion.
Colorado struck back less than two minutes later when Stewart broke free for a 51-yard touchdown run.
The Wildcats tried to fight back early in the final frame when Coffman hit Quarles for a 16-yard scoring strike.
But once again the Buffs answered right back, as Hawkins connected with Paul Richardson for a three-yard touchdown, pushing Colorado's lead to 44-29.
Coffman and the Wildcats kept clawing their way back, as the quarterback found Chris Harper for a 23-yard touchdown midway through the final frame. However, the Buffs would keep KSU off the scoreboard the remainder of the contest, holding on for the eight-point victory.
