NCAA Game Summary - Mississippi State at Houston

Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Vick Ballard rushed for 134 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries as the Mississippi State Bulldogs defeated the Houston Cougars, 47-24, in a non-conference affair at Robertson Stadium.

Quarterback Chris Relf connected on just 7-of-14 pass attempts for 57 yards for Mississippi State (4-2), but gained 96 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries in the win.

Houston (3-2) was led by quarterback David Piland, who threw for 301 yards and two touchdowns on 30-of-57 passing in the loss.

The Cougars opened up the scoring with an 18-yard touchdown pass from Piland to Kierrie Johnson.

Ballard helped Mississippi State tie the game after finding paydirt from five yards out. Relf gave the Bulldogs the 14-7 lead after scoring on a five-yard touchdown run. Ballard continued his dominance by marching into the end zone from 12 yards out. The first quarter ended with a safety, giving the Bulldogs a 23-7 advantage.

Mississippi State then received a 47-yard field goal from Sean Brauchle.

Houston temporarily halted the bleeding when Matt Hogan connected on a 32-yard field goal.

The Bulldogs headed into the locker room up 33-10 after Corey Broomfield picked off a pass and took it to the house with 23 seconds remaining in the first half.

Ballard scored the last of his three touchdowns on the Bulldogs' opening drive of the second half, this time from 12 yards out, as Mississippi State led 40-10.

Houston trailed 40-17 after a 17-yard touchdown pass from Piland to Patrick Edwards for the last score in the third quarter.

The Bulldogs weren't done, as LaDarius Perkins put the nail in the coffin with a 20-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter.

Isaiah Sweeney caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from backup quarterback Terrance Broadway with 4:36 remaining to cap the game's scoring.
