NCAA Game Summary - Utah State at New Mexico State

Las Cruces, NM (Sports Network) - Kyle Hughes buried a 28-yard field goal as time expired to lift the New Mexico State Aggies to a dramatic 20-17 win over the Utah State Aggies in a Western Athletic Conference tussle at Aggie Memorial Stadium.

Seth Smith led New Mexico State (3-3, 1-1 WAC) with 98 yards and a score on 26 carries, while Marquell Colston added 62 yards on the ground in the win. Trevor Walls had a lackluster day under center for the Aggies, as he completed a mere 8-of-25 for just 81 yards. Walls did, however, run for a touchdown in the win.

Robert Turbin paced USU (1-4, 0-1) with a 184-yard rushing effort in the loss. Signal-caller Diondre Borel threw for just 156 yards and a score for the Aggies.

A one-yard plunge from Walls gave New Mexico State a 7-0 lead late in the opening period of play.

New Mexico State added a 31-yard Hughes field goal early in the second stanza to give the Aggies a 10-0 advantage.

Utah State got on the board just minutes later with a 34-yard field goal by Chris Ulinski, and then sent the contest into the break knotted up at 10-10 with a 15-yard touchdown toss from Stanley Morrison to Omar Sawyer with under a minute to go.

USU then took a 17-10 lead following a four-play, 91-yard drive to open the third period of play, capped off with a 21-yard pass from to Xavier Bowman.

But New Mexico State responded midway through the frame with a one-yard plunge by Seth smith to tie the contest at 17-17.

The fourth period remained quiet in the scoring department until NMSU earned a three-point win with Hughes' 28-yard field goal.
