Final Score: (6) Boise State 42, New Mexico State 7
Boise, ID (Sports Network) - Doug Martin ran for four touchdowns, as sixth- ranked Boise State completed a second consecutive unbeaten regular season with a 42-7 thrashing of New Mexico State.
Martin finished with 83 of the 256 total rushing yards for the Broncos (13-0, 8-0 WAC), who also clinched the Western Athletic Conference title outright and kept their at-large BCS bowl hopes alive.
Boise State finished the 2008 season 12-0 before losing to TCU in the Poinsettia Bowl.
Kellen Moore completed 19-of-30 passes for 272 yards and a touchdown for Boise State, with that score going to Titus Young. The Broncos totaled 544 yards and held New Mexico State (3-10, 1-7) to just 191.
"Everyone has to buy into the fact that we have to take this week-by-week," Moore said of hopes of getting into a BCS game. "And that are a lot of things we can't control. If we get to caught up in the hype, it's going to take away from preparation or practice or some other aspect of the game."
Seth Smith ran for 114 yards on 35 carries for the Aggies, who fell to 0-10 all-time against Boise State. Jeff Fleming completed 3-of-7 passes for 36 yards for New Mexico State, while Trevor Walls completed one pass in five attempts.
The Aggies' Kyle Hughes missed a 43-yard field goal in the middle of the first quarter, and Boise State capitalized after taking over at its own 36-yard line. The Broncos got just over midfield before Moore found Young for a 47- yard score with 3:56 left.
Early in the second quarter, Boise State started a drive at the Aggies' 32 after a 20-yard punt by Hughes. It took the Broncos four plays to reach the end zone, as Jeremy Avery got there from nine yards away to make it a 14-0 game with just over 10 minutes left in the half.
Another short punt by Hughes on the next Aggies drive gave Boise State the ball at midfield, and the Broncos again scored -- this time on a four-yard run by Martin with seven minutes left that made it 21-0.
New Mexico State got deep into Boise State territory on the next drive, but a Fleming fumble was recovered by the Broncos at their own five. Boise State had 2:50 on the clock, but went 95 yards in 12 plays, the last a four-yard run by Martin, and the Broncos held a 28-point margin at the break.
Martin had a two-yard TD run midway through the third, then scored on a 56- yard run with 3:42 left in the frame, and New Mexico State never recovered. Walls ran for a one-yard touchdown with 4:32 to go to complete the scoring.
