Final Score: (23) Utah 38, San Diego State 7
Salt Lake City, UT (Sports Network) - Eddie Wide had two touchdowns on the ground as 23rd-ranked Utah crushed San Diego State, 38-7, in a Mountain West Conference matchup.
Wide finished the game with 16 carries for 84 yards while Jordan Wynn was 14- for-28 with 195 yards and a score for the Utes (9-2, 6-1 MWC), who bounced back from last week's 55-28 loss at TCU to win their 17th straight home game.
"We responded well after last week," said Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham. "Our energy and passion was great in the first half and we executed well on offense, defense and special teams. It's nice to get back on track and respond to the loss like we did. Today we rebounded well and played good football. Now we just need to continue to move forward to the next game."
Ryan Lindley was 17-for-37 with 207 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions while Dominique Sandifer had seven catches for 74 yards and a score for the Aztecs (4-7, 2-5), who have dropped their past three games.
"Utah got up on us quickly," said San Diego State head coach Brady Hoke. "We gave up big plays and we had a couple of penalties on both sides of the ball that didn't help us. We put ourselves back a little bit offensively and defensively and then we had some things go wrong. We have to do a better job of stopping the big plays defensively and have to get better as a team."
San Diego State started the game with the ball, but Lindley was picked off by Lamar Chapman near midfield. Two plays later, Wide took the ball into the end zone from eight yards out for a 7-0 lead.
Later in the first quarter, Utah made it a 14-0 game as Wide capped a five- play, 68-yard drive with a two-yard run with 2:24 to play in the frame.
After forcing the Aztecs to punt, the Utes put together an 11-play drive that covered 69 yards with Shaky Smithson taking it into the end zone from four yards out for a 21-0 advantage.
Another three-and-out from San Diego State gave Utah the ball back near midfield and the hosts made it a 28-0 as Wynn and Jereme Brooks hooked up on a 24-yard score with just under six minutes to play in the second.
Joe Dale added to Utah's lead as he picked off Lindley and took it back 30 yards into the end zone and the Utes got a 47-yard field goal from Joe Phillips on the final play of the half for a 38-0 lead.
The Aztecs finally got on the board a bit over three minutes into the fourth quarter as Lindley hit Sandifer for a 17-yard score to make it a 38-7 game. Utah's defense prevented any further scores the rest of the way.
The Utes have won four straight games against the Aztecs, giving up just 35 points during the run. Utah holds a 16-12-1 lead in the series...San Diego State closes its regular season at UNLV next Saturday...Utah plays at BYU next Saturday...Brooks finished the game with seven catches for 100 yards.
