NCAA Game Summary - Western Michigan at Northern Illinois

DeKalb, IL (Sports Network) - Chad Spann ran for 132 yards and scored three touchdowns as the Northern Illinois Huskies won their MAC opener over the Western Michigan Broncos, 38-3, at Huskie Stadium.

Spann scored on runs of one, 20, and five yards for the Huskies (3-2, 1-0 MAC), who scored the last 31 points of the afternoon. Chandler Harnish was 9- of-15 through the air for the Huskies for 135 yards.

Western Michigan (2-3, 1-1) saw its two-game winning streak snapped. Tim Hiller was 18-of-35 passing for the Broncos for 176 yards, but was intercepted three times.

The Huskies opened the scoring on the first drive of the afternoon, when Harnish found Nathan Palmer with a 33-yard touchdown pass.

The Broncos responded late in the first quarter when John Potter booted a 40- yard field goal.

Spann scored twice for the Huskies in a seven-minute span in the second quarter on runs of one and 20 yards to give his team a 21-3 halftime lead.

Spann added a third touchdown less than two minutes into the third quarter from five yards out. Mike Salerno extended the Huskie lead with a 22-yard field goal late in the period.

Jake Hoffman made a big play at the start of the fourth quarter when he picked off a Hiller pass and returned it 79 yards for a score, completing a run of 31 unanswered points for the home team.

The Huskie defense limited WMU to just 73 rushing yards.
