Final Score: Ohio University 38, Northern Illinois 31
Athens, OH (Sports Network) - Theo Scott tossed three touchdown passes to lead the Ohio University Bobcats to a 38-31 win over the Northern Illinois Huskies in a Mid-American Conference showdown at Peden Stadium.
LaVon Brazill had two receiving touchdowns and also scored on a long punt return in the first quarter for OU (8-3, 6-1 MAC). With wins in six of their last seven games, the Bobcats find themselves in second place in the MAC East Division behind the Temple Owls, whom they'll take on next weekend in the season finale.
Chandler Harnish threw for 307 yards and two scores for the Huskies (7-4, 5-2), who saw their win streak snapped at four games. Landon Cox headlined the receiving corps with 132 yards on 11 catches.
OU seized the early momentum, as Scott gave the Bobcats a quick 7-0 lead on a 27-yard touchdown pass to Brazill on the game's third play from scrimmage.
After the OU defense forced a punt on the ensuing possession, Brazill returned the kick 91 yards for a touchdown to put the Bobcats on top, 14-10 at the 10:25 mark of the first quarter.
NIU cut the deficit to 14-7 on a 23-yard touchdown pass from Harnish to Kyle Skarb, capping an 81-yard drive that ate up more than six minutes.
The Huskies tied it at 14-14 midway through the second quarter, when Chad Spann scored on a one-yard plunge.
A 28-yard field goal by OU kicker Matt Weller gave the Bobcats a 17-14 lead with just under six minutes remaining in the third quarter.
The Huskies were forced to punt on their next possession, but Brazill lost a fumble on the return and it was scooped up by NIU's Spencer Williamson at the OU 12. Two plays later, Spann scored on a one-yard run to give NIU a 21-17 lead.
Brazill atoned for his mistake on the Bobcats' next possession, as he hauled in a nine-yard touchdown pass from Scott to put OU back on top.
The seesaw battle continued early in the fourth quarter, as NIU reclaimed the lead on a 26-yard touchdown pass from Harnish to Marcus Lewis with 10:38 to play.
Five minutes later, OU took a 31-28 lead on Scott's seven-yard scoring strike to Taylor Price.
The Bobcats extended their lead to 10 when Julian Posey scored on a 41-yard interception return with 1:39 to play.
The Huskies managed a field goal to cut the deficit to seven with 42 seconds remaining, but they were not able to recover the on-side kick.
The Bobcats managed to win despite being out-gained in total offense, 421-247.
