Lafayette, LA (Sports Network) - Chris Masson completed a four-yard strike to Marlin Miller with under 30 seconds remaining to lift the UL-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns to a dramatic 38-34 victory over the North Texas Mean Green in a Sun Belt Conference battle at Cajun Field.
Masson completed just 13-of-29 passes for 122 yards through the air in the UL- Lafayette (3-2, 1-0 SBC) win, but the signal-caller also added 31 yards and a score on the ground to go with the decisive toss to lead the Cajuns. Undrea Sails gained 93 yards on 18 carries as well for UL-Lafayette.
North Texas (1-4, 0-2) was paced by Lance Dunbar, who carried the ball 32 times for a stellar 187 yards and four touchdowns. Quarterback Riley Dodge had a rough day under center, throwing for just 209 yards and three costly interceptions in the loss.
The Mean Green struck first, as Jeremy Knott connected on a 41-yard kick to give North Texas a 3-0 advantage.
But the Cajuns responded as time winded down in the first frame, finding paydirt on a 70-yard interception return by Dwight Bentley.
A 45-yard Tyler Albrecht field goal early in the second period gave the Cajuns a 10-3 lead, but the Mean Green responded just minutes later with a one-yard plunge by Dunbar to knot things up at 10 apiece.
The Cajuns regained the lead midway through the stanza with a 25-yard Masson touchdown run, and extended their advantage by a 24-10 margin less than two minutes later following a 33-yard blocked punt return by Andrew Joseph.
But the Mean Green added a pair of Dunbar touchdown runs from 37 yards and one-yard out to tie the contest at 24-24 heading into the break.
North Texas took the lead, 27-24, early in the third period with a 27-yard kick by Knott, and extended the advantage late in the frame with a one-yard Dunbar plunge.
UL-Lafayette cut its deficit to 34-31 early in the final period of play with a one-yard scamper by Brad McGuire.
The Cajuns final drive went eight plays for 58 yards, culminating in the four- yard connection by Masson to Miller. The Mean Green were unable to answer in the short time remaining, and ULL held on for the four-point win.
