Final Score: UAB 30, Southern Miss 17

Birmingham, AL (Sports Network) - Quarterback Joe Webb ran for 138 yards and a score, as UAB finally beat Southern Mississippi, 30-17, at Legion Field.

Webb passed for just 23 yards and a touchdown on 6-of-13 attempts for the Blazers, who had lost each of the nine previous meetings between these two schools.

Jeffery Anderson had a 21-yard touchdown reception for the Blazers (2-3, 2-1 Conference USA), who snapped a three-game slide and are off next week. Rashaud Slaughter added 38 yards on six carries, and Josh Zahn went 3-for-3 on field goal attempts.

Austin Davis notched 234 yards, two TDs and an interception on 24-of-32 passing for the Golden Eagles (3-2, 1-1), who have dropped two straight. Quentin Pierce caught both TD throws and amassed 108 yards on seven grabs. Tory Harrison added 66 yards on 11 carries in defeat.

With the game tied in the second half, UAB got the ball at the USM 43. A pass interference call moved the ball to the 22, and three plays later Webb hit Anderson for a 21-yard TD strike to make it 17-10 with 1:43 left in the third.

Zahn nailed a 51-yard field goal with 12 minutes left in the game to make it a 10-point affair.

After forcing a three-and-out on UAB's next drive, Souther Miss went 59 yards in 10 plays, and Pierce hauled in a 20-yard pass for a score to close the gap to 20-17 with about 5 1/2 minutes left to play.

UAB was forced to punt on its following touch, but Freddie Parham bobbled the kick and Drew Luker recovered it to make it 1st-and-10 from the USM 23 with 2:34 showing on the clock. The Blazers failed to record a first down and settled for a 32-yard field goal that made it 23-17 with 1:27 showing.

Hiram Atwater had an interception on the Golden Eagles' next play and returned it 40 yards to the end zone to effectively seal the victory.

Zahn's 27-yard field goal gave the Blazers a 3-0 lead about 4 1/2 minutes into the game.

Following a stop on Southern Mississippi's ensuing possession, Webb capped a nine-play, 69-yard drive with a 31-yard TD dash to make it 10-0 with a couple of minutes left before the second stanza.

In the second quarter, Davis hit Pierce for a 41-yard TD strike. As Pierce scampered into the end zone unscathed, the Golden Eagles were within three points. Justin Estes hit a 49-yard field goal as the half expired to tie it up.
