Hattiesburg, MS (Sports Network) - Damion Fletcher scored a pair of rushing touchdowns to help lead the Southern Miss Golden Eagles to a 36-16 win over the Memphis Tigers in Conference USA action at Roberts Stadium.
Fletcher finished the outing with 67 yards on 17 carries for Southern Miss (4-3, 2-1 C-USA), while Martevious Young converted 10-of-21 passing for 155 yards and a score, but was intercepted once and sacked two times on the evening.
The Tigers (2-5, 1-3), losers of three of their last four outings, were paced by Will Hudgens who connected on 26-of-42 for 255 yards and a touchdown, but also two INTs. Curtis Steele ran the ball 24 times for a game-high 136 yards as well.
Memphis put the first points on the board, the only scoring of the first quarter, as Matt Reagan knocked through a 48-yard field goal.
Early in the second period Justin Estes answered back for Southern Miss with a 28-yard field goal of his own.
Capping an 11-play, 68-yard drive, Reagan again struck for the Tigers, this time on an 18-yard field goal.
The first trip into the end zone was recorded by Fletcher, a one-yard effort as USM finished off an 11-play, 79-yard drive to earn a 10-6 lead at the break.
The Southern Miss special teams got in on the action in the third quarter as Tracy Lampley returned a punt 50 yards for a score, followed by a one-yard TD run by Tory Harrison to make the score 24-6.
Reagan, who finished 3-of-4 on the night, booted a 28-yard field goal late in the third to cut the Memphis deficit to 24-9.
In the fourth period Fletcher logged a three-yard touchdown run and Young combined with DeAndre Brown on a 28-yard touchdown pass play for the Golden Eagles, while in between Hudgens hit Duke Calhoun with a 12-yard TD pass for the visitors, and with a couple of failed PATs for USM the home team had to settle for a 20-point win.
Memphis, which controlled the ball for 33 minutes on the night, converted just 5-of-15 on third down.
