Final Score: South Florida 30, (20) West Virginia 19
Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - Freshman B.J. Daniels racked up 336 yards of offense and threw for three touchdowns, leading South Florida to a 30-19 victory over 20th-ranked West Virginia.
Daniels, who took over as the starting quarterback when Matt Grothe suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in a September 19 game against Charleston Southern, completed 13-of-26 passes for 232 yards and also rushed for 104 yards on 14 carries.
Carlton Mitchell had five receptions for 132 yards and a touchdown for the Bulls (6-2, 2-2 Big East), who snapped a two-game skid.
"I thought the team played so much better than they had in the past few weeks," said USF coach Jim Leavitt. "We had the same opportunities in the Cincinnati game, we just didn't make the plays. There were about three or four catches where I thought B.J. put the ball right there and they were dropped. We were fortunate to get out of this one and win with dropping that many balls."
Jarrett Brown connected on 19-of-32 passes for 205 yards and was picked off once for the Mountaineers (6-2, 2-1), who had a four-game winning streak stopped. He also rushed for a pair of scores.
Brown scored on an 11-yard run to the right side with 9:18 remaining in the third quarter, drawing WVU within 20-19, but Daniels moved the Bulls 69 yards on the ensuing possession to the end zone. The freshman finished the march with a six-yard touchdown pass to Sterling Griffin.
"He is a really good player," WVU defensive lineman Josh Taylor said of Daniels. "He is quick. It was pretty rough trying to contain him. We just have to do a better job containing when you are playing a quarterback like that."
A 44-yard field goal by Eric Schwartz less than three minutes into the fourth quarter widened the lead to 11 points and USF's defense then took over the game.
The Bulls' defense forced a three-and-out on the ensuing possession and then pinned WVU into a 4th-and-28 after a pair of penalties, and Brown threw incomplete.
USF ran off the final 3:21 on the clock.
Brown scored on a three-yard run to the right side, extending the ball over the goal line before going out of bounds, with 9:42 left in the opening quarter.
Mitchell caught a 49-yard TD pass two minutes later before Schwartz gave USF a 10-7 edge with 2:55 left in the first with a 30-yard field goal.
Jamar Taylor failed to get out of the end zone on a run, as the Mountaineers recorded a safety on the final play of the first quarter. But the Bulls extended the lead to eight points on a Daniels 11-yard scoring pass to A.J. Love midway through the second. That capped a five-play 80-yard drive, helped by a 69-yard bomb to Mitchell.
Tyler Bitancurt split the uprights from 33 yards away for WVU before Schwartz nailed a 26-yarder in the final minute for a 20-12 margin at the half.
The Mountaineers return home to face Louisville next Saturday, while the Bulls have a bye next week before playing at Rutgers November 12...WVU running back Noel Devine was held to 42 yards on 17 carries...Moise Plancher had 18 rushes for 86 yards for South Florida, while Alric Arnett caught six balls for 84 yards for the Mountaineers...South Florida has won three of the last four meetings.
