Final Score: Utah 30, Louisville 14
Salt Lake City, UT (Sports Network) - Terrance Cain threw for 202 yards and a pair of touchdowns to guide the Utah Utes in a 30-14 triumph of the Louisville Cardinals in non-conference action at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City.
Cain completed 17-of-22 tosses with one interception and he added 51 yards on the ground for Utah (3-1), which had its nation-best 16-game winning streak snapped last weekend by Oregon. Eddie Wide led the ground attack with 129 yards on 19 carries, as he did a terrific job replacing Matt Asiata, who left after a knee injury on the game's first touchdown. David Reed was the team's main target with six receptions that went for 78 yards and a score.
Quarterback Justin Burke led the way for Louisville (1-2) with 181 yards and a score on 15-of-33 tosses. He was picked once, but did have a rushing touchdown, as the Cardinals fell to 0-4 all-time versus Utah.
Utah took a 14-0 lead at the end of one quarter thanks to a pair of touchdowns that came in a 18-second span midway through the first period. Asiata first scored on a 24-yard run before Reed hauled in a 42-yard pass from Cain.
Joe Phillips hit a pair of field goals in the final five-plus minutes of the second frame to give the Utes a 20-0 advantage at the intermission.
Louisville finally got on the board midway through the third quarter with an eight-yard touchdown run by Burke.
Phillips gave Utah some breathing room and a 23-7 lead with a 24-yard field goal early in the final period.
The Cardinals refused to go away and made things interesting with a 16-yard touchdown pass from Burke to Cameron Graham.
The Utes, however, sealed the deal with a Cain 34-yard scoring strike to Jereme Brooks with just over five minutes remaining.
Utah, which improved to 7-0 all-time against current members of the Big East, has now won 12 straight games at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
