Hattiesburg, MI (Sports Network) - Damion Fletcher ran for 115 yards and scored twice to lead the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles to a thrilling 37-34 victory over the Virginia Cavaliers in a non-conference tussle at MM Roberts Stadium.
Tory Harrison amassed 101 yards on the ground in just three attempts in the win for Southern Mississippi (3-0), while signal-caller Austin Davis completed 14-of-26 pass attempts for 130 yards and a touchdown.
Jameel Sewell completed 24-of-46 pass attempts for 312 yards and a pair of touchdowns while running for two more to lead the Cavaliers (0-3) in the losing effort, while Kris Burd grabbed six balls for 79 yards and a touchdown. Tim Smith caught three passes for 76 yards and a score as well for Virginia.
The Cavaliers jumped out to a 7-0 lead early in the first period of play with a 69-yard strike from Sewell to Smith.
Virginia added a pair of Robert Randolph field goals late in the frame from 34 and 24-yards out to extend its advantage to 13-0.
The Golden Eagles got on the board early in the second quarter following a six-yard touchdown run by Fletcher.
But the Cavaliers responded minutes later with a 29-yard Sewell toss to Burd to give Virginia a 20-7 lead.
A 27-yard Justin Estes field goal late in the frame pulled Southern Mississippi to within 10.
But Sewell found the endzone with under a minute remaining in the first half on a four-yard scamper to give his Cavaliers a 27-10 halftime advantage.
The Golden Eagles added a two-yard scoring strike from Davis to Ryan Hanks early in the third quarter.
Sewell found the endzone once more midway through the frame following a one- yard plunge to give Virginia a 34-17 advantage.
But the Golden Eagles responded on the ensuing kickoff with a 100-yard return by Freddie Parham to make it 34-24.
The Golden Eagles continued to battle back early in the final period of play, scoring on a 10-yard run by Fletcher.
Southern Mississippi took a 37-34 lead midway through the frame following a 57-yard touchdown run by Harrison and the Golden Eagles were able to hold on and preserve the three-point win.
