NCAA Game Summary - Virginia Tech at Maryland

(Saturday, November 14th)

Final Score: (20) Virginia Tech 36, Maryland 9

College Park, MD (Sports Network) - Tyrod Taylor threw for 268 yards and three touchdowns on 13-of-23 passing, as 20th-ranked Virginia Tech hammered Maryland, 36-9, in an ACC matchup.

Ryan Williams rushed for 126 yards on 23 carries with a score, while Jarrett Boykin caught three passes for 118 yards and a TD for Virginia Tech (7-3, 4-2 ACC), which was able to build off a 16-3 win at East Carolina on November 5. The Hokies have won two straight after dropping the previous two contests.

Dyrell Roberts had three receptions for 78 yards and a score, and Andre Smith added a TD grab. Matt Waldron kicked three field goals in the win.

"It was good to come in here and get a win," Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer said. "I thought Maryland played hard and they had some tough injuries and the quarterback came in and made some big plays against us. He did a nice job. They played tough throughout."

Jamarr Robinson completed only 12-of-32 passes for 104 yards but rushed 24 times for 129 yards for Maryland (2-8, 1-5), which has dropped five straight games. Jared Harrell had a fumble recovery for a touchdown, and Nick Ferrara booted a 36-yard field goal to account for the Terps' only points.

"We played a good football team," Maryland head coach Ralph Friedgen said. "They made some plays and we had some opportunities to make plays that we didn't make. Our kids fought hard and we got some more injuries we are dealing with. It is what it is."

Williams' one-yard scoring run and a three-yard Taylor-to-Smith connection in the first quarter gave Virginia Tech the early 14-point advantage.

Ferrara split the uprights from 36 yards away early in the second to get Maryland on the board at 14-3.

Taylor threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Roberts, then found Boykin for a 64- yard score later in the second period, and the Hokies took a 27-3 lead into the half.

In the third quarter, Waldron drilled a 21-yard field goal with just over three minutes left, and he added a 28-yard effort in the early stages of the fourth for a 30-point advantage.

Harrell's fumble recovery in the end zone with 11:25 to play made it a 33-9 game after the two-point conversion failed. Waldron then connected from 33 yards out with 5:52 remaining to account for the final score.
