College Park, MD (Sports Network) - Joe Martinek ran for 147 yards and a pair of touchdowns to help the Rutgers Scarlet Knights secure a 34-13 win over the Maryland Terrapins in non-conference action at Byrd Stadium.
Martinek carried the ball 19 times for the Scarlet Knights (3-1) and also caught a pair of passes for another 24 yards. Quarterback Domenic Natale hit just 4-of-12 passing for 42 yards and was sacked twice in the contest.
The Terps (1-3) were led by Chris Turner who converted 21-of-38 passing for 271 yards and a touchdown, but the signal-caller was sacked three times and had a trio of passes picked off on the afternoon.
The first play from scrimmage for Maryland set the tone for the rest of the day as Turner had his pass picked off by Antonio Lowery and returned 36 yards for a touchdown for the visitors.
The Terps responded two-and-a-half minutes later with a 38-yard field goal by Nick Ferrara to make the score 7-3 at the end of the first quarter.
Rutgers kicker San San Te had a response of his own when he nailed a 23-yard field goal just seconds into the second frame to cap an 11-play, 30-yard drive.
Maryland then closed out the first half with 10 straight points, beginning with a 24-yard TD pass from Turner to LaQuan Williams, followed by a 34-yard field goal by Ferrara, providing the home team with a 13-10 edge at the break.
The second half belonged to Rutgers however, with the team ripping off 24 unanswered points, starting with a fumble recovery for a touchdown by George Johnson to account for the only points of the third period.
San San Te converted a 37-yard field goal minutes into the fourth, followed by TD runs of 29 and 61 yards by Martinek to provide the visitors with the overwhelming 21-point triumph.
Rutgers, which was without starting quarterback Tom Savage due to a head injury, generated just 42 yards through the air and 249 yards of offense altogether.
