Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Thaddeus Lewis threw for a career-best five touchdowns, as the Duke Blue Devils pulled away for a 49-28 victory over the NC State Wolfpack in ACC action at Carter-Finley Stadium.
Lewis completed an efficient 40-of-50 tosses for 459 yards and added a rushing touchdown to his career day, as Duke (3-3, 1-1 ACC) snapped an 11-game losing streak to the Wolfpack. Conner Vernon led the team with 10 catches that went for 86 yards and a score, while Donovan Varner hauled in seven passes for 154 yards and a touchdown.
Quarterback Russell Wilson paced NC State (3-3, 0-2) with 172 yards and a score through the air and 58 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Toney Baker also got into the mix with 73 rushing yards and a touchdown on nine carries.
The Blue Devils struck first in this contest, as Lewis connected with Brett Huffman for a two-yard touchdown pass.
The Wolfpack responded with a 10-yard touchdown run by Wilson midway through the quarter.
A two-yard touchdown run by Lewis with just 30 seconds remaining in the opening frame gave Duke a 14-7 edge.
However, that lead was short-lived as NC State scored on its first play of the drive when Wilson connected with Owen Spencer for a 63-yard touchdown pass.
The Blue Devils regained the lead at 21-14 when Lewis hit Re'quan Boyette with a seven-yard touchdown pass.
Still NC State continued to fight and eventually evened the score at 21 apiece with a nine-yard touchdown scamper by Baker.
Duke went back on top, 28-21, midway through the third quarter when Lewis hit Danny Parker with a six-yard touchdown pass.
However, T.J. Graham returned the ensuing kickoff 93 yards for the Wolfpack, tying the game at 28 apiece.
Lewis continued his domination for Duke, as the signal caller tossed his fourth touchdown pass of the game, connecting with Austin Kelly for an eight- yard score.
Early in the fourth quarter Lewis threw his fifth touchdown pass of the contest to the fifth different receiver, as Vernon hauled in a five-yard pass, pushing Duke's advantage to 42-28.
Duke capped its performance when Adam Banks recovered a fumble in the endzone for a touchdown and a 49-28 triumph.
The Blue Devils, who defeated NC State in Raleigh for the first time since 1984, forced four turnovers and recorded the same amount of sacks. Duke also converted 13-of-19 third downs and held the ball for over 40 minutes on its way to 502 yards of total offense.
