Final Score: Stanford 34, (24) Washington 14
Stanford, CA (Sports Network) - Toby Gerhart ran for 200 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries, as Stanford upended 24th-ranked Washington, 34-14.
Andrew Luck connected on 7-of-14 passes for 103 yards, and he also ran for a score for the Cardinal (3-1, 2-0 Pac-10).
Jake Locker threw for 191 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions on 16-of-31 attempts for the Huskies (2-2, 1-1), who failed to carry over the momentum from a stunning, last-second victory over USC last week. What made the triumph over the Trojans even more astonishing is the fact that Washington did not win a game last season.
"Not at all. I think our kids understood the game plan," said Washington head coach Steve Sarkisian on if there was a let down following the upset against USC. "Inevitably, we couldn't get them to stop running the football. They ran the ball almost 50 times with only 14 passes. Stanford controlled the game that way and then in turn we couldn't get the momentum back in our favor to run the ball and get control of the game. I don't think that is a let down emotionally. Our kids came in ready to play. We just have to do a better job of coaching."
Chris Polk amassed 75 yards on the ground in defeat.
Stanford's Chris Owusu returned the opening kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown.
Later in the first quarter, Luck fumbled the ball. Justin Glenn scooped it up for Washington and scampered 51 yards to the end zone.
It didn't take the Cardinal long to regain the lead. On the first play of the next drive, Gerhart rumbled 60 yards to make it 14-7 with 1:48 to go in the opening frame.
Nate Whitaker drilled a 40-yard field goal to extend Stanford's lead to 10 points. A 19-yard TD pass from Locker to Jermaine Kearse closed the gap to 17-14, but Stepfan Taylor's one-yard plunge gave the home team a 24-14 advantage at the break.
Whitaker's 25-yard boot accounted for all the scoring the third quarter, and Luck tacked on a nine-yard rushing score in the fourth.
The Huskies were ranked for the first time since 2003...Stanford's Coby Fleener had three receptions for 57 yards...Luck gained 59 yards on the ground.
