NCAA Game Summary - Stanford at Wake Forest

Final Score: Wake Forest 24, Stanford 17

Winston-Salem, NC (Sports Network) - Riley Skinner plunged into the endzone in the final seconds of regulation to give the Wake Forest Demon Deacons a thrilling, 24-17 victory over the Stanford Cardinal in a non-league matchup at BB&T Field.

Skinner's touchdown capped off a well-orchestrated 11-play, 91-yard drive. The quarterback finished the afternoon with 187 yards and one touchdown through the air on 18-of-26 passing. Wake Forest (1-1) dominated the Cardinal with its rushing attack, rumbling for 251 yards on 5.6 yards per attempt. Josh Adams led the way with 54 yards on eight totes, while wideout Chris Givens added 51 yards on just five carries.

As for Stanford (1-1) the team was paced by Andrew Luck, who threw for 276 yards and two touchdowns. Ryan Whalen, who was on the receiving end of both touchdown passes, finished the game with nine receptions and 123 yards. Stanford's powerful tailback Toby Gerhart was limited to only 82 yards on 17 carries in the setback.

The Cardinal took an early 7-0 lead when Luck hit Whalen with a 26-yard scoring strike.

The Demon Deacons got on the scoreboard midway through the frame when Shane Popham connected on a 20-yard field goal.

Luck and Whalen hooked up again early in the second quarter when the signal caller hit the wideout for a 17-yard touchdown pass, pushing Stanford's lead to 14-3.

The Cardinal closed out the first half with a 54-yard field goal by Nate Whitaker.

Midway through the third quarter the Demon Deacons cut their deficit to 17-10 with a three-yard touchdown plunge by Mike Rinfrette.

Seconds into the fourth quarter Wake Forest tied the game at 17 apiece when Skinner found Jordan Williams for a nine-yard touchdown pass.

Wake Forest put forth a strong defensive effort late in the fourth quarter, and that gave Skinner and company their opportunity to lead this team to a victory.

The Demon Deacons offense was clicking on all cylinders, accumulating 25 first downs on 458 yards of total offense.
