NCAA Game Summary - California at Oregon

(Saturday, September 26th)

Final Score: Oregon 42, (6) California 3

Eugene, OR (Sports Network) - Jeremiah Masoli threw for 253 yards and three touchdowns, as Oregon blew out No. 6 California, 42-3, in the Pac-10 opener for both schools.

Masoli completed 21-of-25 passes and LaMichael James rushed for 118 yards and a score for the Ducks (3-1, 1-0 Pac-10), who notched their largest margin of victory ever at home over the Golden Bears. The previous mark was 31 points, set in 1973.

The Ducks rolled up 524 yards of offense to just 207 for the Golden Bears. Tight end Ed Dickson caught 11 passes for 148 yards and three scores.

"We know we have the talent and the ability to stop anyone," said Dickson. "It's amazing to come out here as underdogs and beat Cal. It's a huge confidence boost for the whole team. We needed this win. The atmosphere at Autzen was amazing and all the fans really contributed to this win today."

Oregon has won at home over the Golden Bears in eight of the last nine such encounters. California had won the previous three overall meetings.

Kevin Riley was limited to 123 yards passing on 12-of-31 efficiency for the Golden Bears (3-1, 0-1).

California running back Jahvid Best had 55 yards on the ground, all in the first half.

Cal head coach Jeff Tedford, who was the Ducks' offensive coordinator from 1998-2001, saw his team dominated, as the visitors fell behind by a hefty 25-3 margin at the half and never recovered.

"Momentum was in their favor pretty much all game," said Tedford. "I'm really impressed with their defensive front and I give them all the credit."

Vince D'Amato kicked a 47-yard field goal just one minute into the game, but Morgan Flint's 30-yarder tied it for the Ducks with just under six minutes remaining in the opening quarter.

Oregon exploded for 22 points in the second quarter. Masoli hit Dickson for a 26-yard score on the opening play of the period, and the Ducks converted the two points via pass from Nate Costa to Flint.

After D'Amato missed a field goal, each team fumbled the ball away - Masoli for Oregon and Best for Cal.

The latter led to Remene Alston, Jr.'s one-yard TD run for an 18-3 difference, and James scored on a four-yard run in the final minute of the half.

Masoli and Dickson hooked up from nine yards away in the third and again from 36 yards with nearly two minutes left in the same quarter. That completed a 12-play, 96-yard drive.

Flint booted a 42-yard field goal in the fourth.
