Madison, WI (Sports Network) - John Clay ran for 143 yards and scored a touchdown to lead the Wisconsin Badgers to an exciting 34-31 double-overtime victory against the Fresno State Bulldogs in a non-conference battle at Camp Randall Stadium.
Wisconsin signal-caller Scott Tolzien threw for 225 yards and a score in the win, while Isaac Anderson grabbed four passes for 70 yards for the Badgers (2-0).
Ryan Colburn completed 22-of-36 pass attempts for 289 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs (1-1), while Ryan Mathews ran for 107 yards on 19 carries in the losing effort. Devon Wylie grabbed five catches for 114 yards and a touchdown as well for Fresno State, while Seyi Ajirotutu added six catches for 83 yards and a pair of scores.
The Bulldogs took a 7-0 lead late in the first period of play with a 13-yard toss from Colburn to Chastin West.
Early in the second quarter, Colburn extended the Fresno State lead with a 70- yard strike to Wylie.
Wisconsin got on the board just minutes later with an 11-yard run from Zach Brown.
But the Bulldogs took a 21-7 lead midway through the frame with a 14-yard toss from Colburn to Ajirotutu.
An eight-yard run from David Gilreath pulled the Badgers to within seven late in the half, and Wisconsin added a 57-yard kick from Philip Welch as time expired to trail 21-17 at halftime.
The Badgers then took a 24-21 lead late in the final period with a 72-yard scamper by Clay.
But the Bulldogs tied the contest at 24 apiece with a 41-yard Goessling kick to send the meeting into overtime.
Tolzien found Nick Toon on a six-yard strike to give Wisconsin a 31-24 edge to begin the extra frame, but the Bulldogs responded minutes later with a seven-yard connection from Colburn to Ajirotutu to tie the contest at 31-31 and force a second overtime.
The Badgers then secured a 34-31 victory with a 22-yard Welch kick following an interception by safety Chris Maragos.
