Final Score: Michigan State 49, Western Michigan 14
East Lansing, MI (Sports Network) - Ashton Leggett ran for 110 yards and four touchdowns, as the Michigan State Spartans cruised to a 49-14 non-conference win over the Western Michigan Broncos at Spartan Stadium.
Leggett entered the game with just one career carry under his belt, though he took advantage of his opportunity and became Michigan State's first 100-yard rusher since Javon Ringer last year. Kirk Cousins completed 22-of-25 passes for 353 yards and two touchdowns in helping the Spartans (5-5, 3-3 Big Ten) snap out of a two-game skid.
Tim Hiller struggled under center for Western Michigan (4-6, 3-3), completing only 15-of-37 passes for 111 yards and a touchdown. He was also sacked three times. Outside of an 80-yard touchdown run by Brandon West, the Broncos managed just 14 rushing yards.
On the game's third play from scrimmage, Leggett broke free for a 71-yard touchdown run to give the Spartans an early lead and fire up the home crowd.
Leggett scored again on a two-yard run midway through the opening quarter.
Later in the first quarter, Cousins connected with Garrett Celek for a 13-yard touchdown pass to put Michigan State on top, 21-0.
The Spartans added to their lead midway through the second quarter, when Cousins found Keshawn Martin for a 48-yard touchdown strike.
Leggett scored his third rushing touchdown, this time from one yard out, to give MSU a comfortable 35-0 lead just before the half.
WMU got on the board on the first play of the second half, when West eluded the Spartans defense for an 80-yard touchdown dash.
The Broncos scored again on the first play of the fourth quarter, when Hiller tossed a 12-yard touchdown pass to Blake Hammond to make it a 35-14 game.
But Michigan State answered with a seven-play, 80-yard drive, punctuated by Leggett's 13-yard touchdown run. The Spartans added a final touchdown on a seven-yard pass from Keith Nichol to Dion Sims.
Michigan State has now won seven straight against WMU, and 10 of 12 overall in the head-to-head series.
