Knoxville, TN (Sports Network) - Jonathan Crompton threw for 221 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Tennessee Volunteers to a 31-16 triumph over the Vanderbilt Commodores in SEC action.
Montario Hardesty rushed for a career-high 171 yards and a touchdown on 32 carries in the win for Tennessee (6-5, 3-4 SEC).
Mackenzie Adams connected on 19-of-35 passes for 174 yards and one touchdown in the loss for Vanderbilt (2-10, 0-8).
Hardesty reached the end zone for Tennessee on a five-yard run less than three minutes into the game, and the team extended its lead to 10-0 later in the first quarter on a 25-yard field goal by Devin Mathis.
With 2:18 left in the opening period, Vanderbilt cut its deficit to 10-3 on a 31-yard field goal by Ryan Fowler.
The Commodores knotted the game at 10-10 midway through the second quarter on a two-yard touchdown toss from Adams to Ryan van Rensburg.
The Vols quickly regained control of the game with two touchdown in the final 3:16 of the first half. Crompton threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Denarius Moore, and he then tossed a 16-yard scoring strike to Luke Stocker, giving the Vols a 24-10 lead.
The only points of the third quarter came on a 27-yard Fowler field goal, and his 32-yard field goal with 2:54 remaining in the fourth quarter brought Vandy within one score at 24-16.
The Commodores got the ball back in the final minute, but Adams was intercepted by Tennessee's Wes Brown, who returned the pick 25 yards for a touchdown to seal the Vols' victory.
Tennessee finished the game with a 422-297 advantage in total yards.
