Knoxville, TN (Sports Network) - Montario Hardesty rushed for 140 yards and one touchdown as the Tennessee Volunteers defeated the Ohio Bobcats, 34-23, in a non-league affair at Neyland Stadium.
Jonathan Crompton added 222 passing yards for Tennessee (2-2) and finished the game with two touchdowns and one interception.
As for the Bobcats (2-2), they were led by Theo Scott, who threw for 319 yards and one touchdown. LaVon Brazill was the main target for Scott, as the wideout hauled in eight receptions for 92 yards and one score.
The Volunteers struck first in this contest, as Hardesty scored on an 11-yard run early in the opening frame.
The Bobcats instantly responded as Chris Garrett returned the ensuing kick off 95 yards to pay dirt.
Ohio took a 14-7 advantage midway through the first quarter when Scott hit Brazill with a two-yard touchdown pass.
However, the Vols evened the score at 14 apiece as time expired in the first frame when Crompton connected with Brandon Warren with a three-yard touchdown pass.
It was Tennessee's defense that broke the tie midway through the second stanza, as Chris Walker intercepted a pass and returned it seven yards for a touchdown.
Matt Weller's 36-yard field goal cut Ohio's deficit to 21-17 late in the first half, but Daniel Lincoln responded for Tennessee with a 38-yard field goal as time expired in the second quarter.
Ohio brought its deficit to four points midway through the third frame when Weller connected on an 18-yard field goal.
The Vols responded later in the quarter, as Crompton found Bryce Brown for a 26-yard scoring strike.
Ohio continued to fight however, as Weller made a 31-yard field goal early in the final quarter.
Tennessee proved to be too tough though, as the Vols used a 49-yard field goal by Lincoln midway through the final stanza, and eventually went on to win by an 11-point margin.
