Albuquerque, NM (Sports Network) - Rodney Ferguson rushed for 149 yards and four touchdowns to lead the New Mexico Lobos to a 70-7 victory over the San Diego State Aztecs in a Mountain West Conference tussle at University Stadium.
James Wright added 110 rushing yards for New Mexico (4-4, 2-2 MWC), while Brad Gruner rumbled for 42 yards and two touchdowns. Gruner also threw for 92 yards and one touchdown in the win.
Ryan Lindley threw for 156 yards and one touchdown for SDSU (1-6, 0-3), but the quarterback was also intercepted once and sacked twice.
The Lobos jumped out to a quick 21-0 lead, beginning with a 20-yard touchdown run by Gruner. Robert Ferguson's four-yard TD run followed just minutes later, and then the New Mexico defense got involved, as Jaymar Latchison returned a fumble 28 yards to pay dirt.
The Lobos continued their offensive dominance in the second stanza when Ferguson scored on touchdown runs of four and five yards, pushing New Mexico's lead to 35-0.
Gruner added a 13-yard TD run midway through the quarter and then tossed a 19-yard scoring strike to Chris Mark in the final seconds of the first half to extend the Lobos lead to 49-0 at halftime.
Ferguson continued to run all over San Diego State in the second half, as the tailback scored on a 35-yard run early in the third quarter.
The Aztecs finally got on the board midway through the third frame when Ryan Lindley connected with Darren Mougey for a 15-yard scoring strike.
New Mexico scored two more times in the fourth quarter, as Matt Quillen plunged into the end zone from four yards out, while Terence Brown added a 37- yard touchdown run to give the Lobos a convincing 63-point win.
