Provo, UT (Sports Network) - Max Hall threw for 317 yards and three touchdowns, leading the 17th-ranked BYU Cougars to a 41-12 thrashing of the San Diego State Aztecs at Cougar Stadium.
Hall completed 25-of-30 passes, and Austin Collie had nine receptions for 127 yards and two scores for the Cougars (9-1, 5-1 Mountain West), who have won three straight games since their lone setback at TCU. Michael Reed caught five passes for 95 yards, and Harvey Unga added 37 yards on the ground in the victory.
Ryan Lindley threw for 160 yards on 21-of-36 passing, with a touchdown and an interception for the Aztecs (1-9, 0-6), who are now mired in a six-game losing streak. Tyler Campbell led the team in rushing yards with 41 on four carries. Darren Mougey had the lone touchdown in the loss.
San Diego State forced a three-and-out on BYU's opening drive and took over at the Cougars 49 after a punt. But the Aztecs fumbled the ball away on their first offensive play, and Fui Vakapuna put the Cougars up by seven with a seven-yard rushing score just five minutes in.
Mitch Payne put BYU up 10 with 8:37 left in the first half, kicking a 33-yard field goal.
The Cougars put together an 80-yard drive on their next series, and Andrew George caught a six-yard touchdown pass from Hall to go up by 17.
Payne hit a 25-yard field goal in the waning moments of the half to put BYU ahead 20-0 going into the break.
The Cougars came out in the second half and scored a touchdown. Wayne Latu ran in from two yards out to give BYU a commanding 27-point lead early in the half.
San Diego State finally got some points on the board late in the third, as Lane Yoshida nailed a 49-yard field goal.
Yoshida added another field goal in the final moments of the third, but Hall came right back and tossed a 61-yard touchdown to Collie to make it a 34-6 game early in the fourth.
Collie added another touchdown reception from nine yards out with 10 minutes to play, extending the lead for BYU.
Lindley found Mougey for a nine-yard touchdown in the final minute of the game to account for the final margin.
BYU leads the all-time series between the schools, 25-7-1, including seven of the last eight...Cougars WR Dennis Pitta had five catches for 59 yards...Vincent Brown led the Aztecs in receiving yards with 52 on seven receptions...BYU outgained San Diego State, 421-280.
