Final Score: Arkansas State 33, North Texas 28
Denton, TX (Sports Network) - Reggie Arnold ran for 101 yards and two touchdowns, as the Arkansas State Red Wolves held off the North Texas Mean Green, 33-28, in a Sun Belt Conference clash at Fouts Field.
ASU (6-5, 4-2 SBC) quarterback Corey Leonard threw for 205 yards and a touchdown, while adding another 49 yards and a score on the ground.
Cam Montgomery did all he could for North Texas (1-11, 0-6), running for 121 yards and two TDs, but turnovers proved costly for the Mean Green. Quarterback Giovanni Vizza was intercepted three times, including one at the ASU 20 with less than a minute to play.
Giovanni's first interception came on the Mean Green's second drive, which set up an eventual Red Wolves touchdown on a five-yard run by Arnold midway through the opening quarter.
North Texas tied it at seven on a 12-yard strike from Vizza to Brock Strickler with 6:29 to play in the second quarter.
The Red Wolves reclaimed the lead three minutes later, on Leonard's 37-yard touchdown pass to Jahbari McLennan.
North Texas answered with an eight-play, 54-yard drive, punctuated by Vizza's seven-yard scamper into the end zone to knot the score at 14 apiece with 48 seconds remaining in the half.
But a 57-yard return on the ensuing kickoff set the Red Wolves up with a first down on the North Texas 25, and they'd end the half with three points on a 36- yard Josh Arauco field goal.
ASU drove 80 yards on its opening possession of the second half, with Leonard crossing the goal line on a three-yard run to put the Red Wolves ahead, 24-14.
But Montgomery answered with two touchdown runs in the same quarter (26 yards, 29 yards) to put the Mean Green back on top, 28-24. From there, however, it was all Red Wolves.
ASU took the ball on the ensuing kick and drove 80 yards in five plays, as Arnold plunged in from one yard out to give the Red Wolves a 30-28 lead. Arauco's extra-point attempt was blocked.
Arauco added three more points on a 24-yard field goal with 9:05 to play in the fourth quarter, capping a 16-play, 85-yard drive. North Texas recovered a fumble to regain possession with 4:05 to play, but Vizza's fourth-down pass was intercepted deep in Red Wolves territory with 40 seconds on the clock.
ASU scored on all five of its trips to the red zone in the game.
