Final Score: Akron 47, Toledo 30
Akron, OH (Sports Network) - Chris Jacquemain passed for 226 yards and three touchdowns, and the Akron Zips posted a 47-30 victory over the Toledo Rockets.
Jacquemain completed 16-of-23 passes, and Dennis Kennedy ran for 153 yards and a score on 30 carries for Akron (5-4, 3-2 MAC), which has won three of four. Andrew Johnson added 54 yards on the ground and a score, and Dashan Miller, Jeremy Bruce and Merce Poindexter each caught a touchdown pass for the Zips.
Aaron Opelt completed 23-of-35 passes for 277 yards and three touchdowns for the Rockets (2-7, 1-4), who began coach Tom Amstutz's farewell tour with a loss. Amstutz announced Monday that he would be stepping down as the head coach after this season. He has served as the head coach of Toledo since 2001 and has been on the coaching staff since 1977 -- not including a stint from 1987-1989 when he coached with Navy.
Stephen Williams caught 10 passes for 136 yards and two touchdowns in the loss, and Nick Moore gained 99 yards through the air on eight catches. DaJuane Collins led the Toledo rushing attack with 51 yards.
Toledo made it a three-point game halfway through the third, as Opelt found Williams for an eight-yard touchdown with just over six minutes left in the quarter.
The Zips restored a 10-point lead three minutes later. Jacquemain hit Miller for a nine-yard score to cap a 63-yard set.
Kennedy and Johnson each scored rushing touchdowns in the early portion of the fourth for Akron, sealing the victory as they had built up a insurmountable 47-23 advantage.
Opelt hit Williams on a 16-yard touchdown pass with just over five minutes to play in regulation.
Akron got on the board on its opening drive. Jacquemain capped off a 62-yard drive with a 23-yard touchdown pass to Bruce just 3:21 into the game.
A blocked punt on Toledo's first drive gave Akron a 14-0 lead. The snap appeared to be low, and punter Bill Claus took too long to gather the ball, allowing the defense to easily block the punt attempt. Akron's Aaron Williams was able to fall on the ball in the end zone for the score.
After a Rockets punt, the Zips were able to drive 92 yards down the field for a score. Poindexter made a juggling 19-yard catch in the end zone to put Akron up by three touchdowns with 4:22 still to go in the first.
Alex Steigerwald got the Rockets their first points just before the first quarter ended, drilling a 28-yard field goal.
Toledo cut the deficit to 11 with about five minutes left before halftime, as Opelt took a quarterback bootleg to the left side for the touchdown from six yards out, completing the 80-yard drive.
Bruce dropped a sure touchdown for Akron, as he was wide-open in the end zone with six seconds until halftime. The Zips managed three points before the break on a Igor Iveljic 23-yard field goal to take a 24-10 lead.
Opelt opened up the second half with a 22-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Stafford to make it 24-16, but Akron's Shawn Lemon ran back a blocked extra point attempt 98 yards to regain two points for the Zips.
