Kalamazoo, MI (Sports Network) - Tim Hiller threw for 225 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Western Michigan Broncos to a 27-17 victory over the Toledo Rockets in a Mid-American Conference tilt at Waldo Stadium.
Aaron Winchester paced the ground game for WMU (9-2, 6-1 MAC), rushing for 111 yards on 28 carries. Jamarko Simmons grabbed eight passes for 96 yards, while Juan Nunez hauled in five receptions for 87 yards and one score.
Aaron Opelt threw for 213 yards and one touchdown for Toledo (2-8, 1-5), while Nick Moore collected 10 receptions for 97 yards.
The Rockets took a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter when Opelt connected with Stephen Williams for a 27-yard scoring strike.
The Broncos got on the scoreboard early in the second stanza with a 25-yard field goal by John Potter.
As time expired in the first half, the Broncos took a 10-7 lead when Hiller hit Austin Pritchard with a one-yard TD pass.
Hiller pushed Western Michigan's lead to 17-7 when he connected with Juan Nunez for an 11-yard scoring strike.
A 25-yard field goal by Potter midway through the third quarter pushed the Broncos lead to 20-7.
Seconds into the final frame the Rockets cut their deficit to 20-10 with a 21- yard field goal by Alex Steigerwald.
Minutes later the Broncos responded with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Matt Stevens.
Opelt plunged into the end zone from one yard out late in the fourth quarter, but the Rockets could come no closer, falling to the Broncos by a 10-point margin.
