DeKalb, IL (Sports Network) - Chandler Harnish threw for 175 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Northern Illinois Huskies to a 38-7 victory over the Toledo Rockets in a Mid-American Conference tilt at Huskie Stadium.
Harnish also rushed for 60 yards in the win for NIU (4-3, 3-1 MAC), while Chad Spann led the ground game with 82 yards and two touchdowns.
As for the Rockets (2-5, 1-2), they were paced by Morgan Williams, who rushed for 50 yards and one score in the loss.
Midway through the first quarter the Huskies opened the scoring with a 12-yard touchdown run by Spann.
NIU extended its lead to 14-0 in the final seconds of the first stanza when Harnish connected with Marcus Perez for a 45-yard scoring strike.
The lone score in the second quarter was a two-yard TD run by Spann, which gave the Huskies a 21-0 lead at the break.
Toledo finally got on the scoreboard early in the third frame when Williams rumbled into the end zone from 21 yards out.
Minutes later, however, the Huskies answered with a 32-yard field goal by Mike Salerno, pushing the Huskies' advantage to 24-7.
NIU dominated the final quarter of the contest, as Harnish threw two touchdown passes, hitting Perez with a 15-yard scoring strike early in the frame, which was followed by a 10-yard TD pass to Reed Cunningham late in the stanza.
The Huskies forced three turnovers in the win and also held Toledo to just 229 total yards.
