Lafayette, LA (Sports Network) - Tyrell Fenroy ran for 81 yards and three touchdowns, as the UL-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns upended the Florida International Golden Panthers, 49-20, in Sun Belt Conference action at Cajun Field.
Michael Desormeaux returned to the lineup and completed 13-of-19 passes for 216 yards and two TDs, helping UL-Lafayette (5-3, 4-0 SBC) remain perfect in league play.
Julian Reams paced FIU (3-5, 2-2) with 70 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries.
FIU's T.Y. Hilton made a splash by returning the opening kickoff 90 yards for a score, giving the Golden Panthers a quick 7-0 lead.
But the Ragin' Cajuns responded with an eight-minute drive, punctuated by Desormeaux's six-yard scoring strike to Ladarius Green.
FIU reclaimed the lead in the final minute of the opening quarter, when Reams crossed the goal line on a one-yard run.
But the second quarter was all UL-Lafayette. Fenroy tied the score at 14 on a four-yard run with 11:14 remaining in the first half.
Seconds later, Gerren Blount gave the Ragin' Cajuns a 21-14 lead when he scooped up a fumble and returned it 22 yards to the end zone.
Fenroy added another touchdown on a three-yard run with 7:40 to play in the half.
And with less than a minute to play until halftime, Desormeaux found Jason Chery for a 25-yard touchdown pass to extend the Ragin' Cajuns' lead to 35-14.
UL-Lafayette opened the second half with a four-play, 73-yard drive, capped by Fenroy's one-yard touchdown plunge.
The Cajuns iced the game with a seven-minute drive later in the third quarter, with Julian Shankle finding the end zone on a two-yard run.
FIU was held off the scoreboard until the final minute of the game, when Eric Kirchenberg scored on a 10-yard pass from Wayne Younger.
With his effort, Fenroy became just the seventh player in NCAA history to post four 1,000-yard rushing seasons.
