Lafayette, LA (Sports Network) - Trevor Vittatoe threw for 294 yards and five touchdowns and the Texas-El Paso Miners outlasted the UL-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns, 37-24, in a non-conference tilt at Cajun Field.
Vittatoe completed 24-of-33 pass attempts with just one interception, as UTEP (4-5) snapped a two-game slide. Kris Adams caught six of those passes for 83 yards and two touchdowns, and Terrell Jackson paced the ground attack with 105 yards on 14 carries.
Tyrell Fenroy paced ULL (5-4) in defeat with 126 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries. Quarterback Michael Desormeaux added 43 rushing yards on five carries and he threw for 185 yards, but with just one touchdown against three interceptions. With the outcome, the Cajuns saw their four-game win streak come to an end.
The Cajuns' defense stepped up early, as Gerren Blount intercepted a pass and took it 55 yards to paydirt less than two minutes into the game.
UTEP knotted the score with a 16-yard scoring strike from Vittatoe to Jeff Moturi late in the period.
After the teams traded field goals, the Miners grabbed the lead with a 32-yard touchdown pass from Vittatoe to Tufick Shadrawy late in the second quarter. The extra-point, though, was off the mark and UTEP carried a 16-10 lead to the break.
Midway through the third quarter, UTEP made it a 23-10 game courtesy of a seven-yard touchdown pass from Vittatoe to Adams. Minutes later, Vittatoe and Moturi hooked up on a seven-yard scoring strike for the Miners.
ULL kept things close with a three-yard touchdown run by Fenroy late in the third quarter.
Vittatoe, however, gave UTEP a commanding 37-17 lead with a 23-yard touchdown toss to Adams early in the fourth period.
Desormeaux connected with Ladarius Green on a nine-yard touchdown pass midway through the final quarter, but the Cajuns would get no closer in the 37-24 setback.
The Miners racked up 408 total yards in the game, while their defense forced four turnovers.
