NCAA Game Summary - Southern Miss at Arkansas State

Jonesboro, AR (Sports Network) - Austin Davis threw two touchdown passes to help the Southern Miss Golden Eagles hold off the Arkansas State Red Wolves, 27-24, in non-league action at ASU Stadium.

Davis finished with 219 yards passing for Southern Miss (2-1), while wideout Shawn Nelson caught seven passes for 110 yards.

ASU (2-1) quarterback Corey Leonard threw for 256 yards, two TDs and one INT. Reggie Arnold paced the ground game with 84 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.

After the teams traded field goals in the first quarter, Tory Harrison gave the Golden Eagles a 10-3 lead with a one-yard touchdown run, which capped off an 11-play, 71-yard drive.

The Golden Eagles surged ahead, 17-3, on Davis' one-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jonathan Massey midway through the second quarter.

The Red Wolves narrowed the gap to 17-10 on Leonard's 16-yard scoring strike to David Johnson with 8:32 remaining in the third quarter.

Five minutes later, ASU tied the score on an eight-yard touchdown run by Arnold.

But the Golden Eagles took charge in the fourth quarter, beginning with Britt Barefoot's 28-yard field goal with 10:47 to play.

Southern Miss took a 27-17 lead when Davis connected with Damion Fletcher for a 24-yard touchdown pass with 5:30 remaining.

ASU would not go quietly, as Leonard found Jeff Blake for a five-yard touchdown pass to make it a 27-24 game with 2:14 remaining. But with less than a minute remaining, Leonard was intercepted by Eddie Willingham.

Southern Miss managed to win despite giving up 5.5 yards per rush, and 15.1 yards per completion.
