Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Quarterback Austin Davis completed 15-of-26 pass attempts for 212 yards and two touchdowns to give the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles a 28-12 win over the SMU Mustangs in a Conference USA showdown at Ford Stadium.
Damion Fletcher paced the Golden Eagles (6-6,4-4 CUSA) ground attack, carrying the ball 19 times for 59 yards and a score.
SMU (1-9, 0-8) was paced by Bo Levi Mitchell, who completed 26-of-49 pass attempts for 253 yards and one touchdown. Justin Willis was Mitchell's favorite target, catching 11 passes for 88 yards and a touchdown.
The Golden Eagles scored the only points of the first quarter, when Davis found Johdrick Morris from two yards out for the score.
SMU got on the board early in the second quarter when Thomas Morstead drilled a 40-yard field goal to make it a 7-3 game.
Morstead struck again, kicking a 43-yard field goal as time expired in the first half, to make it a 7-6 game at the break.
Southern Mississippi extended their lead to 14-6, midway through the third quarter, when Davis hooked up with Gerald Baptiste for a 44-yard touchdown strike.
The Golden Eagles extended their lead to 21-6 late in third quarter when Fletcher bounced off tackle for a three-yard score.
Southern Mississippi put the game out of reach, in the opening minute of the fourth quarter, when V.J. Floyd scored on a nine-yard touchdown run.
The Mustangs scored late in the fourth quarter on a four-yard pass from Mitchell to Willis. The two point conversion was unsuccessful, securing the Golden Eagles 16-point victory.
SMU's Jesse Henderson made the most of the loss, totaling 64 kick returns yards to set an NCAA record with 2,945 career kickoff return yards.
