Final Score: Memphis 29, Arkansas State 17

Memphis, TN (Sports Network) - Curtis Steele ran for a game-high 203 yards and a score as the Memphis Tigers defeated the Arkansas State Red Wolves, 29-17, in non-conference play at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.

Steele carried the ball 22 times for the Tigers (2-3) as the squad won its second in a row. Quarterback Arkelon Hall converted 10-of-25 passing for 178 yards as well.

Losers of two of their last three, the Red Wolves (3-2) saw quarterback Corey Leonard connect on 11-of-23 passing for 173 yards, but he was intercepted once and sacked a total of six times in the setback.

Charlie Jones scored on a pair of runs in the first quarter for Memphis, hitting the end zone from three and seven yards out, but with a failed PAT following the second TD the Tigers had to settle for the 13-0 lead at the end of one.

ASU actually took a one-point lead in the second frame, thanks to a 23-yard touchdown run by Leonard and a nine-yard TD run by Reggie Arnold with 7:53 remaining in the first half.

Memphis kicker Vinny Zaccario made up for his earlier miss when he nailed the first of three field goals, converting from 20 yards out to push the Tigers back into the lead at 16-14.

On the ensuing drive the Red Wolves covered 51 yards on 11 plays, but had to settle for a 33-yard Josh Arauco field goal to retain a 17-16 advantage at the break.

Memphis then ran off 13 unanswered points in the second half, beginning with field goals of 37 and 40 yards by Zaccario, followed by a two-yard touchdown run by Steele late in the fourth quarter to seal the 12-point win.

The Tigers, who scored on all five of their red-zone opportunities, converted just 3-of-12 on third down.
