Birmingham, AL (Sports Network) - Quarterback Joe Webb rushed for 135 yards and one touchdown to lead the UAB Blazers to a 23-21 victory over the Marshall Thundering Herd in Conference-USA action at Legion Field.
Webb also threw for 217 yards for UAB (2-6, 1-3 C-USA), and Rashaud Slaughter added 54 rushing yards and one score in the win.
As for the Thundering Herd (3-4, 2-1), Mark Cann threw for 237 yards and two touchdowns in the loss. Darius Passmore caught both touchdowns, and finished with 165 yards on six receptions.
The defense for UAB got things started early, as Anthony Barnes tackled Passmore in the end zone, giving the Blazers a 2-0 edge.
Late in the first quarter the Thundering Herd took a 7-2 lead with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Cann to Cody Slate.
Marshall pushed its lead to 14-2 early in the second stanza when Cann connected with Passmore on a 71-yard scoring strike.
However, the Blazers stormed back, scoring twice in the final minutes of the first half to take a 17-14 edge into the break.
The first touchdown was a three-yard run by Justin Brooks, which capped off a 19 play, 93-yard drive. Slaughter followed with a one-yard plunge into the end zone.
After a scoreless third quarter Webb scampered into the end zone from 23 yards out, but a block extra point left the Blazers with a 23-14 advantage.
Marshall cut its deficit to 23-21 when Mario Harvey returned a fumble for a 62-yard touchdown. However, the Blazers defense would keep Marshall off the scoreboard for the remainder of the contest, holding on for a two-point win.
