Final Score: Colorado State 28, Houston 25
Fort Collins, CO (Sports Network) - Billy Farris threw for 276 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Colorado State Rams to a 28-25 victory over the Houston Cougars in non-conference action at Hughes Stadium.
Dion Morton caught a 79-yard touchdown pass on the second play from scrimmage for CSU (2-1), and he finished with five catches for 126 yards.
Case Keenum threw for 380 yards and three TDs for Houston (1-3), but he also threw three interceptions. Mark Hafner finished with eight catches for 73 yards and a TD, while Bryce Beall carried 14 times for 96 yards.
Farris' 79-yard bomb to Morton accounted for the only points of the first quarter. Kyle Bell gave the Rams a 14-0 lead on a one-yard touchdown plunge with 10:07 remaining in the second quarter, capping a 13-play, 75-yard drive that chewed 7:32 off the clock.
It looked like things could get out of hand following Gartre Johnson's seven- yard touchdown run with 1:52 remaining in the half.
But the Cougars answered with a 12-play, 79-yard drive, resulting in a 17-yard Ben Bell field goal to get on the scoreboard.
Houston opened the second half with an impressive drive, punctuated by Keenum's four-yard touchdown pass to Hafner.
Later in the third quarter, Keenum made it 21-17 with a 15-yard scoring strike to Tyron Carrier.
But the Rams put together another seven-minute drive, and Farris found Kory Sperry in the end zone to make it a 28-17 game with 9:27 to play.
The Cougars climbed to within 28-25 on a three-yard touchdown pass from Keenum to L.J. Castile, but that was all they could manage. Houston got the ball back with 1:19 remaining, but CSU's Klint Kubiak sealed things up with an interception in the end zone in the final seconds.
The teams were separated by only 51 yards of total offense, yet CSU enjoyed a nearly 15-minute edge in time of possession.
