Greenville, NC (Sports Network) - Ben Hartman nailed a 27-yard field goal in overtime to lead the East Carolina Pirates to a 19-16 victory over the Marshall Thundering Herd in a Conference USA matchup at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.
Pat Pinkney completed 26-of-37 for 287 yards and a touchdown to pace East Carolina (6-3, 4-1 C-USA) in the win, and Norman Whitley gained 72 yards on 23 carries for the Pirates. Whitley also led the team with five receptions for 60 yards.
Darius Marshall ran for 123 yards on 20 carries to lead the Thundering Herd (4-5, 3-2), while Mark Cann threw for 137 yards and two scores in the losing effort. Cody Slate tallied five catches for 62 yards and two touchdowns for Marshall.
The Pirates struck first, as Hartman connected on a 31-yard field goal to give East Carolina a 3-0 lead late in the first quarter.
Hartman struck again early in the second period with a 51-yard kick to extend the East Carolina advantage.
Marshall got on the board late in the frame with a 31-yard Craig Ratanamorn field goal.
East Carolina responded just minutes later with a five-yard strike from Pinkney to Davon Drew.
Cann found Slate with a seven-yard toss early in the third period, but the extra point attempt failed and the Thundering Herd trailed, 13-9.
Hartman connected on his third field goal of the game late in the frame, a 21- yard kick that gave East Carolina a 16-9 lead.
With under two minutes remaining in the contest, Cann and Slate connected once more on a 34-yard strike to tie the contest at 16 and force overtime.
After Tyler Warner missed a 42-yard field goal attempt on Marshall's possession in overtime, Hartman clinched the contest for the Pirates with a 27-yard kick.
