Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - LeSean McCoy gained 93 yards on 20 carries and scored three touchdowns to lead the Pittsburgh Panthers to a 27-16 victory over the Buffalo Bulls in non-league action at Heinz Field.
Bill Stull completed 22-of-33 pass attempts for 241 yards for the Panthers (1-1), while Oderick Turner grabbed five balls for 69 yards in the win.
Drew Willy threw for 223 yards and a touchdown to lead Buffalo (1-1) in the losing effort. James Starks ran for 97 yards on 20 carries, while Brett Hamlin had five receptions for 77 yards and a touchdown for the Bulls.
Buffalo took the lead late in the first quarter, as Brandon Thermilus plunged one yard for a score. The extra point, however, was blocked and the Bulls were forced to settle for a 6-0 lead.
Pittsburgh took a 7-6 lead early in the second period, as McCoy ran for a three-yard touchdown.
A 21-yard field goal from Conor Lee extended the Pittsburgh advantage to 10-6 late in the frame.
The Bulls cut their deficit to 10-9 with under a minute to go in the half thanks to a 35-yard field goal by A.J. Principe.
The Panthers added to their lead early in the third quarter, as McCoy scored from one yard out.
Buffalo pulled within a point midway through the period, as Willy completed a 39-yard scoring strike to Hamlin.
McCoy put Pittsburgh ahead 24-16 early in the final period of play, finding the end zone after a two-yard scamper.
A 42-yard field goal from Lee late in the frame iced the contest for Pittsburgh and accounted for the final score of the day.
The Panthers converted 8-of-13 third down attempts and gained 352 yards of total offense in the win.
