NCAA Game Summary - Northern Arizona at Arizona State

(Saturday, August 30th)

Final Score: (15) Arizona State 30, Northern Arizona 13

Tempe, AZ (Sports Network) - Rudy Carpenter completed 22-of-28 passes for 388 yards and a touchdown to lead the Arizona State Sun Devils to a 30-13 victory over the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks.

Carpenter also led the team in rushing, with 40 yards on five attempts. Michael Jones hauled in six passes for 162 yards while Kerry Taylor had 93 yards receiving and a touchdown.

"(Carpenter) made some great throws. I don't think he made a bad throw; he might have made one bad one," said Arizona State head coach Dennis Erickson. "I thought we protected pretty well, though obviously we've got to get better at that. He knows what's going on. He understands out offense and what we're doing. I thought he did a heck of a good job."

Dmitri Nance added 30 yards rushing on 11 attempts while scoring two touchdowns for Arizona State (1-0), who finished its 2007 season with a loss to Texas in the Holiday Bowl.

Lance Kriesien went 17-of-31 for 152 yards and a touchdown for the Lumberjacks (0-1), and Alex Henderson rushed for 74 yards on 22 carries. Shaun Fitzpatrick led the team in receiving yards with 59 on three receptions while Brian Riley scored the team's only touchdown.

"I give credit to Arizona State," said Kriesien. "They should be ranked higher. We needed all 11 guys tonight and at some point there were some lapses. We didn't take advantage of the opportunities we had in the red zone, but again, all the credit goes to (them). They are a great team."

Arizona State struck first early in the opening quarter. Carpenter completed a five-play, 80-yard drive by hitting Taylor on a 52-yard strike to go up 7-0 with 12:54 left in the first.

Thomas Weber gave the Sun Devils a 10-0 lead with 24 seconds left in the first quarter, hitting a 34-yard field goal.

Carpenter started the second quarter on his own one-yard line, and was able to drive the Sun Devils down the field. Nance rushed for 12 yards on three plays, and the quarterback scrambled for 13 yards to the 26, while advancing 15 more yards on a personal foul call on Northern Arizona, moving it to the 41.

Completions of 13 and 27 yards on consecutive plays put Arizona State on the Lumberjacks' 19, and four plays later Nance capped the 10-play, 99-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown run for a 17-0 advantage a little more than five minutes into the second quarter.

After the defense forced a punt on the next drive, Carpenter led a four-play 80-yard drive in only 1:17 where the signal-caller threw for 74 yards in three plays, as Nance scored his second touchdown of the game on a six-yard scamper with 5:42 left in the half.

Weber added a 36-yard field goal with 1:34 left in the first half to give Arizona State a 27-0 lead going into the break. He added a 28-yarder halfway through the third quarter after Carpenter orchestrated a five-play, 52-yard drive in 1:10.

The Lumberjacks finally got on the board as time expired in the third quarter, as Robbie Dehaze kicked a 21-yard field goal to make it a 30-3 game.

Northern Arizona put together an 10-play, 53-yard drive in the fourth, highlighted by a Kriesien pass to Fitzpatrick for 22 yards, and culminating in a three-yard touchdown pass to Riley to bring the Lumberjacks within 20 with 9:09 left in the game.

Dehaze added a 25-yard field goal with 5:16 left in the game to complete a nine-play, 44-yard drive and cap the scoring at 30-13.
