(Friday, September 12th)

Final Score: Baylor 45, Washington State 17

Waco, TX (Sports Network) - Robert Griffin rushed for 217 yards and two scores on 11 carries and threw for another, as the Baylor Bears defeated the Washington State Cougars, 45-17.

The contest was originally scheduled for Saturday at 12:30 p.m. (et), but was bumped up a day because of the approaching Hurricane Ike.

Griffin connected on 7-of-15 throws for 129 yards, while Jay Finley ran for 119 yards and a score for the Bears (2-1). David Gettis hauled in three passes for 75 yards.

Kevin Lopina completed 17-of-26 passes for 174 yards with two interceptions for Washington State (0-3,0-1). Brandon Gibson had eight receptions for 128 yards.

Chantz Staden's one-yard TD run put the Cougars on the board less than four minutes in. A one-yard scoring plunge by Griffin and a 27-yard strike to Ernest Smith gave Baylor a 14-7 lead with 6:50 to go in the opening quarter.

Washington State tied the game with eight minutes left in the second stanza on Lopina's eight-yard scamper into the end zone. The Bears, though, quickly answered on their next series. On 1st-and-10 from their own 30, Griffin dashed 57 yards to the WSU 13. Jeremy Sanders then ran 13 yards for the score. Finley's 46-yard TD run with 5:12 remaining in the half gave the home team a 28-14 lead at the intermission.

Following the break, the Bears added to their lead with Griffin's 58-yard TD run, and a 10-yard score from Kendall Wright on the first play of the fourth quarter pushed the Baylor lead to 42-14.

Washington State kicker Nico Grasu and counterpart Ben Parks exchanged 31 and 23-yard field goals, respectively, later in the frame.
