Final Score: Purdue 32, Central Michigan 25
West Lafayette, IN (Sports Network) - Kory Sheets busted loose for a game- winning 46-yard touchdown run with a minute remaining, as the Purdue Boilermakers stunned the visiting Central Michigan Chippewas in non-conference action at Rose-Ade Stadium.
Sheets finished with 91 yards and two TDs on the ground for Purdue (2-1). Quarterback Curtis Painter went 27-of-36 for 261 yards, one TD and one INT.
Dan LeFevour had a big day for CMU (2-2), throwing for 291 yards and two TDs, and running for another 112 yards and a TD. However, he did throw a pair of interceptions.
The Boilermakers opened the game with a 14-play drive, but it eventually stalled, and they had to settle for a 45-yard field goal by kicker Chris Summers.
On the ensuing drive, LeFevour answered with an eight-yard scoring strike to Ontario Sneed, capping a 10-play, 80-yard drive for CMU.
The Chippewas stretched their lead to 10-3 after Andrew Aguila kicked a 32- yard field goal with 5:49 remaining in the second quarter.
But Purdue countered with an 80-yard drive, as Sheets tied the game on a one- yard TD plunge with 1:27 to play in the half.
Purdue's Frank Duong accounted for the only points of the third quarter, when he stepped in front of a LeFevour pass and returned it 58 yards for a score.
LeFevour later atoned for that error with a 12-yard touchdown scamper with 11:46 remaining in the fourth quarter, knotting the score at 17 apiece.
But Purdue would not go quietly. The Boilermakers put together another lengthy drive (eight plays, 78 yards), with Painter finding Desmond Tardy for a two- yard touchdown pass.
CMU later scored what it thought was the game-sealing touchdown, as LeFevour hooked up with Sneed for their second touchdown connection with only 1:18 remaining.
But Tardy returned the ensuing kickoff 39 yards, and the Chippewas coughed up some more field position after being flagged for a 15-yard face mask. On first down, Sheets made them pay.
The Boilermakers struggled on the ground (83 yards, 2.9 ypc), but they were able to sustain drives by going 7-of-16 on third down. Conversely, the Chippewas converted only 3-of-13 third downs.
