Final Score: (18) Wake Forest 12, (24) Florida State 3
Tallahassee, FL (Sports Network) - Sam Swank hit four field goals as 18th- ranked Wake Forest got past 24th-ranked Florida State, 12-3, at Doak Campbell Stadium.
Riley Skinner finished 17-of-29 for 217 yards for the Demon Deacons (3-0, 1-0 ACC), whose defense registered five interceptions.
D'Vontrey Richardson completed just 6-of-18 passes for 66 yards and two picks, but led his team with 46 yards rushing on eight carries for the Seminoles (2-1, 0-1), whose only offense came on a Graham Gano field goal in the third quarter.
Starting quarterback Christian Ponder was also 6-of-18 for 52 yards and was intercepted three times.
"There was not a touchdown scored out there tonight on either team," said Seminoles head coach Bobby Bowden. "Difference of the game is their offense executed better then ours executed. We self-destructed. We wouldn't give ourselves a chance to win it, we wouldn't ever give ourselves a chance.
Swank hit a 29-yard field goal 4:29 into the third quarter for a 6-0 Wake Forest lead. Richardson was under center for the next FSU drive which went 63 yards in 10 plays and ended on a 37-yard make by Gano.
The Demon Deacons then embarked on a six-play, 53-yard drive and took a 9-3 lead when Swank was good from 49 yards out.
Swank missed wide left on a 32-yard attempt with 2:46 to play in the contest, but hit a 31-yarder with 2:07 to go which gave Wake Forest a 12-3 advantage. After the miss, Richardson was intercepted by Aaron Curry, who returned the ball to the Florida State 11, setting up the score.
Ponder was back for the following series, but on a 3rd-and-20 was picked off by Chip Vaughn and rumbled down to the FSU 21. Skinner then took a knee on the final three downs to run out the clock.
"We won and that's what I told the guys," said Wake Forest head coach Jim Grobe. "We don't care whether it's 3-0 or 49-48."
Wake Forest jumped on top 3-0 when Swank nailed a 48-yard field goal early in the opening quarter. After the Deacons' first drive failed, Ponder's pass was picked off by Alphonso Smith and brought to the FSU 45. After a first down, the Seminole defense held and Swank made his attempt.
Swank later missed from 27 yards out but Florida State didn't capitalize on its ensuing possession.
Gano missed from 52 yards out with 7:16 left in the half, and another late Seminoles drive was derailed as Kevin Patterson picked off Ponder at midfield and returned the ball to the Seminoles' 17-yard-line with just over a minute to play.
Two plays later, Skinner coughed up the ball at the two, but a pair of Ponder rush attempts ran off the remaining seconds until the break.
